HOUSTON, Texas — A Houston man has been accused of punching a police dog that caught him hiding in shrubbery after a botched robbery Sunday in northwest Houston.
Edward William Montgomery, 23, is charged with interference with a police service animal and aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, court records show.
Investigators said that Montgomery and a companion entered Advance Auto Parts, 1821 W. Mount Houston, pulled guns and ordered the store occupants to the ground, according to an arrest warrant filed in the case.
Police set up a perimeter around the business and arrested Alex Newson, 21, who also is charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, court records show.
Montgomery escaped into the woods and was hiding in shrubbery when he was confronted by the police canine, who grabbed him by his shirt. Police said Montgomery “struck the canine with a closed fist to the canine’s head and body,” but the police dog stayed with his man.
Moments later, Montgomery was led away in handcuffs.
