BOSTON — A Boston police officer who was shot while responding to a reported robbery of a pizza delivery driver Friday was released from Boston Medical Center Sunday night after recovering from non-life-threatening injuries, according to a Boston Police Department spokesperson.

CBS News Boston reported that investigators said John Lazare, 23, was robbing a pizza delivery driver near 44 Cedric St. Friday night when an officer saw the robbery and recognized Lazare from the description of a suspect who robbed another delivery driver on Wednesday.

Lazare shot the officer multiple times when the officer approached him and ran to the roof of a nearby building, according to the news station.

Massachusetts state police later responded to the area to assist the injured officer, officials stated.

First responders took the officer to Boston Medical Center to treat non-life-threatening injuries. The Boston Police Department spokesperson said the agency will not release the identity of the injured officer.

Authorities also found Lazare and arrested him in connection with the incident.

In Roxbury District Court Monday, Lazare was arraigned on several charges in connection with the Friday night shooting. Charges included assault and battery with a firearm, armed robbery and assault with a dangerous weapon, according to court records.

Lazare was ordered to be held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for Friday, June 23.

Boston police and Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden’s office are investigating the shooting.
