Brett Benton died June 4 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle

LEXINGTON, Ky. — A man who was killed in Afghanistan and laid to rest Wednesday was a former police officer from Madison County, Kentucky.

A Lexington news channel reported that Brett Benton died June 4 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. The explosion occurred near Alingar District, Laghman Province, Afghanistan.

At the time of his death, Benton had been working for DynCorp International, which is under contract with the U.S. Army. Before he joined, he had been employed with the Kenton County Police Department.

Benton, who was 37, was buried in the Richmond Cemetery.
