SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — A 16-year-old boy was hospitalized Saturday after a San Bernardino police officer shot him several times at the end of a foot chase from a liquor store.
Authorities said the youth allegedly had pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the officer.
“Fearing for his life, the officer fired his weapon at the suspect, striking him several times,” the San Bernardino Police Department said in a statement. A semiautomatic pistol was found at the scene, the police said.
An unidentified San Bernardino police officer approached the boy about 3:30 p.m. at a liquor store on North Medical Center Drive. The boy ran, and the officer chased him on foot into the rear yard of a housing complex in the 1600 block of West Temple Street, where the shooting occurred, authorities said.
Paramedics took the boy to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton, where a nursing supervisor said he was in critical but stable condition late Saturday.
