A Chicago Police officer shot and killed a 21-year-old man Tuesday night after being fired upon in a North Side neighborhood.

The incident occurred about 8 p.m. after two uniformed officers riding in a marked car confronted the man at Lakewood and Pratt in Rogers Park. Police said the man was acting suspiciously, suggesting he had a weapon.

The man fled west on Pratt while firing a gunshot at one of the officers, who chased him by foot, said police spokesman Pat Camden.

The man fired two more shots, and the officer returned the gunfire, killing the man.

Camden said the man was an admitted member of a street gang who was out on parole on a weapons charge. Police did not release his identity Tuesday night or say how many shots the officer fired.

Some residents said the block typically is quiet. Neighbors said they heard several gunshots during the incident.

“I just started hearing boom, boom, boom, boom,” said Tom Szuba, 51, who lives in the neighborhood.

No officers were injured, Camden said. The Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards is investigating the incident.
