MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. — A security guard who tried to stop a group of young men from throwing eggs at cars and people on Halloween night was ''fighting for his life’’ after being shot in the head and chest, the police commissioner said Thursday.
Neville Webb, 52, of White Plains, was in extremely critical condition at a New York City hospital after the shooting in Mount Vernon about 20 miles north, said Commissioner David Chong.
Webb, a former corrections officer, went to break up the group just before 9 p.m. Wednesday, Chong said. It appeared that one person from the group shot Webb, Chong said.
No arrests have been made.
''It just seems to me that there is a culture out there that really doesn’t value human life,’' Chong said. ''Surely if it’s stemming from the simplicity of Halloween and egg throwing and criminal mischief, it really has escalated into something quite more brutal than that.’'
