SEVIER COUNTY, Utah — A former Utah Highway Patrol trooper has been arrested and booked into the Sevier County Jail for investigation of impersonating an officer and robbing motorists.

The former trooper, who has not been officially charged, is suspected of using an old uniform, jacket, badge and carrying a gun while making several stops on Interstate 70, according to the Sevier County Sheriff’s Office.

However, the man had retired from the UHP in 2003.

The man asked for identification and when motorists handed over their wallets, he took their money, possibly as much as $9,000, as reported by KSL.

News of the man’s arrest shocked the Utah Department of Public Safety, said spokesman Sgt. Jeff Nigbur.

“We work very hard and have a lot of high values and high standards,” Nigbur said. “We would hope that those would carry on after anyone retired.”
