AUSTIN — A Travis County grand jury has cleared three officers involved in a shooting in North Austin last year.
Officers Michael Decker, Cecil Jones and Cory Knop fired at a man police said pointed a rifle at them on Oct. 8, 2013 at a home on Cripple Creek Drive.
The man, Jamarl Tyler, then 44, was hit in the upper left chest but has since recovered.
He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and two counts of aggravated assault on a public servant, according to court records.
He pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated assault on a public servant and received deferred adjudication, court records show. The other charges were dropped.
Officers were initially called to Tyler’s street because they had received a 911 call from a neighbor who reported that he was working in the backyard when he heard gunshots and was struck in the lower right leg.
Because the officers used deadly force, the incident triggered a grand jury investigation into whether their actions violated any criminal laws. However, jurors declined to indict them Friday.
