ABILENE, Texas — The owner of a pit bull that was shot and killed by an Abilene police officer Tuesday afternoon will receive two tickets, said Abilene Police Department spokesman George Spindler Wednesday.

According to police, the dog was killed in the 800 block of Mulberry Street about 1 p.m. Tuesday after it attacked two people. The dog tore the pants of one of the people, said Spindler.

No one was bitten, said Spindler.

“Upon arrival, the initial responding officer quickly assessed the situation and realized that he was confronted with an overly aggressive pit bull,” Spindler said. “During his assessment of the circumstances, the aggressive pit bull charged him with no provocation. The officer waited as long as possible before realizing the dog was not stopping and that he would be attacked. For his own protection, the officer used lethal force.”

Spindler said the dog died en route to the Abilene Animal Shelter.

The owner will be ticketed for failure to restrain the dog and for failure to vaccinate, he said.
