The courageous warrior

“Courage, above all things, is the first quality of a warrior”
— Karl Von Clausewitz

In most of our police agencies we all have the veteran cop that refuses to sit back and get fat on donuts and complain about the latest issues in the department. He’s the guy with the hair that’s turning gray but is in better physical shape then the three-year wonder sitting next to him in roll call. He’s the guy making traffic stops on a carload of thugs in the early morning hours as many cops are nestled in for the final two hours of the shift reading the morning paper.

His friends, his peers and his supervisors knew Larry Nehasil as that guy. His request for a second tour chasing dirt bags in the intelligence bureau didn’t surprise anybody at Livonia PD. Many veteran cops across this country become burned out and simply coast their final couple of years, dreaming of that pension and the life it brings. Larry was a Warrior, always proud and eager. The passing years didn’t tarnish his thoughts on fighting crime.

Larry always wore a big smile and never seemed to have a bad day. When the crap hit the fan you knew Larry was fighting to get there first. He would spend his time digging for that felony arrest while the young bucks would look for traffic arrests.

We all know Larry — we all have that guy in our departments. Today we all mourn as a friend of Larry’s. Today we will pray for his wife and kids and tomorrow we will carry on Larry’s legacy and the Warrior Spirit.

“Let us form one body, one heart, and defend to the last warrior our country, our homes, our liberty, and the graves of our fathers” — Tecumseh.

Stay safe,
