PHOENIX Phoenix police credit an officer’s bulletproof vest with saving his life.

The officer was shot Sunday after pulling over a Chevrolet S10 pickup about 5 p.m. for a traffic violation near 32nd Street and Sweetwater.

Police say the driver stuck a pistol out the window and fired at the officer as he was walking up to the truck, hitting him in the chest area. The 22-year-old officer, on the force seven months, returned fire but the driver sped off.

The officer was checked out at a hospital and released.

About 11:30 p.m., police arrested 35-year-old Jose Abel Cabrera at a house in northwest Phoenix and booked him for investigation of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer and misconduct involving weapons.

Police found an S-10 pickup at the home with what appeared to be two bullet holes in the rear window.
