AUSTIN — A heavily armed man opened fire on a police helicopter Saturday before getting shot and killed by a sniper.
According to KVUE, Austin police dispatched a helicopter to the scene after receiving multiple reports of a man shooting at streetlights.
27-year-old suspect Sawyer Flache opened fire on the helicopter as it arrived – resulting in a 30 minute standoff in which the suspect continued to fire on the APD officers flying overhead.
A seven year veteran APD officer then took the shot that killed Flache.
Flache was later discovered to be armed with multiple pistols and rifles. He has three prior marijuana-related arrests, according to the report.
The chopper took one round to its blades, but returned to the station safely. No officers were injured in the shooting spree.
