CHEROKEE COUNTY, S.C. — A South Carolina county is looking at outfitting each school with a breaching kit after the Robb Elementary shooting in Uvalde, Texas.
The kits include tools like axes, cutting tools and pry bars. The cost ranges from $650 to $800 for each kit. Cherokee County Sheriff Steve Mueller told WSPA that the kits need to be with all of their deputies – including school resource officers.
“We want to take these breaching kits and we want to put those in the hands of all our SROs, as well as our other officers who are out patrolling during school hours,” Mueller said.
The county’s SWAT team has had the kits for years, but Mueller told WSPA that his department “can’t sit back and wait 30 minutes to an hour-plus for breaching to arrive on the scene.”
Mueller hopes to get the kits in his district’s schools in the next 60 days, but is currently looking for ways to fund the initiative.
“We’re looking at piecing these out from our local Lowe’s, Ace Hardware and buying the individual pieces. We think we can save a little bit of money by buying these pieces individually versus a kit,” he said.
