SALT LAKE CITY — Police in Salt Lake City say a bank robbery suspect’s suspicious vest that had wires coming from it turned out to be a hoax.

Detective Veronica Montoya says a bomb squad robot safely removed the vest from the suspect Thursday while he was lying on a sidewalk.

Officers struggled with the man as they tried to arrest him on suspicion of robbing a bank on the city’s west side. When they noticed wires hanging from his vest, they backed away and called the bomb squad.

Police arrested 24-year-old Joshua Anthony Silva. They say he matches the description of the bank robber, who was wearing a motorcycle helmet.

Police later determined that the vest didn’t contain any explosives.
