Helping the police catch bad guys was at the top of Olivia Gant’s bucket list

DENVER — Helping the police catch bad guys was at the top of 6-year-old Olivia Gant’s bucket list,. and the department made that dream come true this weekend.

Gant has neurogastrointestinal encephalomyopathy, which shuts down various vital organs, the Denver Post reported. She was recently hospitalized, but was sent home to receive hospice care.

Her mom, Kelly, said they made a list of things she wanted to do because they “don’t know how much longer she has.” Helping the police was number one on that list.

“With her medical condition we’ve called 911 several times. Every time the ambulance comes, the police respond,” Kelly said in a video posted to the department’s Facebook. “That’s just become … the people she likes to be a part of. She wanted to be like the ones who come help her. She wanted to help others.”

Officers heard about Gant’s wish and made her honorary chief for a day. She received a ride, complete with lights and sirens, in Cpl. Tim Scudder’s patrol car and her own uniform. Gant even made an “arrest” and put a deputy in handcuffs.

“That’s what I think being a police officer is all about: Making an impact on those in the community and those around us,” Scudder said.
