COLUMBIA, S.C. — The University of South Carolina says its police officer did not violate any department policy when he crashed while not wearing his seatbelt and driving 76 mph while responding to a call.

University spokesman Wes Hickman says in a statement that Sgt. Allan Bolin remains in the hospital recovering from serious injuries from the Nov. 7 wreck.

Bolin’s cruiser hit Columbia police Officer Stacy Case’s car in the driver’s side door. Case died. Both officers were responding to a shooting call near a downtown restaurant that turned out to be a suicide.

An investigation found Case ran a red light while driving 64 mph and also was not wearing a seatbelt. Neither officer hit their brakes before the crash.

Columbia police require officers to wear seatbelts.
