Boycott Sought After S.C. Police Shoot Man; Call For Chief’s Resignation

Charleston, S.C. — Church and civil rights leaders are calling for an economic boycott of North Charleston businesses to force the resignation of North Charleston Police Chief Jon Zumalt and the dismissal of six of his officers.

During a Friday meeting of about 70 people, Elder James Johnson of the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition asked residents to stop buying from North Charleston businesses to protest the shooting death of a mentally ill black man in North Charleston last year.

Asberry Wylder, 41, was shot Nov. 7 after shoplifting a package of meat from a grocery store and trying to rob another business. He resisted arrest and tried to stab one of the officers attempting to detain him. Several witnesses said Wylder was shot a second time after he was handcuffed by officers.
