Fla. bank robber waits outside bank to turn himself in

The Orlando Sentinel

Orlando, Fla. — Orlando police arrested a man suspected of robbing a Washington Mutual Bank branch Tuesday.

John Jonas Rojas, 35, was waiting for police after the 3 p.m. holdup of the branch at 4444 Curry Ford Road, Orlando police said. When officers arrived, he told them, “I robbed the bank,” officers said.

Rojas, of Orlando, had approached a teller at the branch with a note that read, “Place money in the bag or I will kill you $5000,” police Sgt. Barbara Jones said.

The teller complied. Rojas left with the cash, Jones said, and a dye pack exploded. She said Rojas then just waited for officers to arrive.

“The officer was like, `Huh?’ ” Jones said, then verified a robbery actually took place.

Rojas was booked into the Orange County Jail with bail set at $250. Jones said he never said why he gave himself up.

“But you know what? We’ll take ‘em,’ ” Jones said.
