WATERBURY, Conn. — Police said a city man drove away from a traffic stop Wednesday, leading officers to chase his car behind a home before he was eventually apprehended.
Waterbury police posted a video of the incident to social media Thursday afternoon compiled from officers’ dash and body cam footage.
Police said officers patrolling in the area of Welton and Walnut streets saw a black Audi A4 run a stop sign. They activated their emergency lights to pull the car over, but the driver fled.
Video showed the Audi stopped by the side of the road. As officers approached on foot on either side of the car, the illuminated brake lights turned off and the car pulled away.
The video then cut to dash camera footage that showed a police cruiser striking the rear quarter panel of the Audi as it attempted to cut through the driveway of a home. The tactic is known as a Precision Immobilization Technique, or PIT maneuver, intended to make a car spin out. Another clip then showed the Audi driving behind a home after a cruiser rammed the front quarter panel trying to block the car in.
“Officers used their vehicle to make contact with the Audi in an attempt to prevent the driver from recklessly entering back onto the roadway and endangering the public,” Waterbury police said in the social media post.
They said the driver “continued driving behind a residence, where his vehicle came to a stop.”
Body camera footage showed police run after and apprehend the driver as he ran from the car.
The driver was identified as 28-year-old Akeeme Davis, a city resident. Waterbury police said he was found to have an extraditable warrant from federal court in Arizona.
He was charged with reckless driving, evading responsibility, interfering with an officer, second-degree reckless endangerment and two counts of first-degree criminal mischief.
Davis was also charged with failure to obey a stop sign, failure to drive in the proper lane and disobeying the signal of an officer, Waterbury police said.
