(CARACAS, Venezuela) - The police chief credited with reducing New York City’s crime rate is taking his expertise overseas.
William Bratton’s company has been hired as a consultant to the police department in Caracas, Venezuela. The Bratton Group is being paid by several Caracas businesses.
Bratton, who also headed the Boston police, served as chief in New York from 1994 to 1996, resigning after a dispute with Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. He helped to implement a policy of going after “quality-of-life” offenses like panhandling, window-breaking and drinking in public. Caracas recently authorized police to implement a similar strategy.
