MIAMI (AP) -- The driver of a getaway car killed an elderly security guard and critically injured her accomplice when she ran them over, police said.
Jason Chaveco, 20, had snatched a purse Monday night and ran to the getaway car, but he was run over as he tried to get in, according to Miami-Dade police. He was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Bienvenido Torres, 76, tried to stop the car and became caught underneath it. He died at the scene.
Chaveco and the driver, Teresa Padron, 19, were both charged with first-degree murder, police said Tuesday. Chaveco was also charged with robbery.
The U.S. Department of Labor reported in September that more security guards were killed on the job than police officers in 2002, the most recent year counted. Nationwide, there were 46 security officers killed, compared to 41 police officers. In Florida, eight security officers died on the job in 2002.
