WILLMAR — A state trooper avoided injury when the trooper’s squad car was struck in a chain-reaction crash near Willmar this morning.

The patrol says the trooper was helping a motorist who had slid into the ditch along Highway 71 about four miles south of Willmar. The trooper’s squad car was parked at the side of the road.

A car driven by a 37-year-old Willmar woman then went out of control on the icy highway and struck the first car, which hit the trooper’s unoccupied squad car in the rear.

The trooper was out of the squad car and not hurt.

The woman who struck the first car was treated for minor injuries.

The crash happened around 8:20 a.m.
