Newspaper raises questions about officer shooting [BIRMINGHAM, AL]

Police1 Staff Report
(BIRMINGHAM, Ala.) -- As the investigation continues into the Nov. 12 police shooting death of a Birmingham man, a local newspaper reports that the drunk suspect who allegedly attacked an officer with his own nightstick had been shot in the back.

Larry Reddick, 28, a convicted drug felon, had been a passenger in a car that officers had pulled over for an expired tag. Reddick had been told to walk away from the vehicle. But he returned and got into a fight with officer George Montgomery, eventually striking Montgomery in the head with his own nightstick, police said.

Reddick had been shot several times and the autopsy report cites a wound to the back as the lethal round, according to the Birmingham News. Approximately 30 feet separated the officer and Reddick, the newspaper reported.

Police officials have “tentatively” stood by Montgomery pointing out that Birmingham officers have a good record of knowing when to shoot, the newspaper reported.
