NY Officer Shot After Bloody Man Lunges; Woman Slashed to Death

The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) -- A police officer was inadvertently shot by his partner early Sunday after they were charged outside a Bronx apartment by a blood-covered man screaming, “I’m God! Kill me!”, police said.

A 32-year-old woman was discovered slashed inside the apartment and later died, police said.

The two officers came to the apartment, on Holland Avenue in the Morris Park section, just after 5 a.m. because of a report of a violent domestic dispute, and heard someone screaming inside, police said.

A 32-year-old man opened the door, naked and covered in blood and screaming the claim that he was God, police told reporters. He charged first at one officer then turned and charged the second officer.

Police said the second officer fired 14 shots, striking the man in both of his legs -- but also inadvertently hitting her partner twice, once in the knee and once in the chest.

The injured officer was in stable condition at Jacobi Hospital. Police did not immediately have a condition for the man who reportedly charged the officers but said he was at St. Barnabas Hospital.

Inside the apartment, officers said they found a 32-year-old woman who had been “hacked and slashed multiple times.” She died later at Jacobi Hospital, police told reporters.

Police did not immediately release the names of anyone involved in the melee. They also did not immediately say how the woman might have been slashed.
