IRVINGTON, N.J. (AP) - An off-duty police officer working as a security guard at a fast-food restaurant shot and killed a man who intentionally drove toward him, authorities said.
The Irvington officer fired one shot because he feared for his life after the man drove toward him and ran over his right foot on Saturday, according to police.
The officer, who was not identified by authorities, was wearing his full police uniform at the time of the incident.
The man who was killed by the one shot fired by the off-duty officer was also not identified. He was apparently waiting for someone who was ordering food inside the restaurant when the officer approached the vehicle, police said.
The investigation of the shooting was turned over to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
