Patrol car hits, fatally injures Utah pedestrian

Deseret Morning News

A patrol car driven by a Provo police officer struck and killed a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk on University Avenue at 500 South Tuesday night, said Utah Highway Patrol trooper Preston Rabin.

The officer was southbound on University Avenue about 8:30 p.m. when he struck a man in the crosswalk at 35 mph, Rabin said.

The pedestrian was transported by Provo paramedics to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, where he died from injuries sustained in the accident.

Provo Police and the UHP are investigating the incident. The cause of the accident is still unknown.

Provo will do an internal investigation to find what led to the accident, Rabin said.

He said the Utah Highway Patrol is involved because police agencies turn to “sister agencies” when investigating accidents involving officers.
