One moment, a Jackson County Sheriff’s deputy was attempting to arrest a wanted man at his workplace. The next, he was pursuing the suspect as he fled on a zero-turn lawnmower.
The unusual pursuit became a potentially deadly encounter when the suspect, James Mitchell Kerr, reached back toward the mower, retrieved a handgun and pointed it at Henderson.
That rapid escalation is the focus of a bodycam video analysis examining the Sept. 19, 2024, incident in Leoni Township, Michigan. The video highlights how quickly officers may need to recognize a threat, change force options and regain their composure during a high-stress encounter.
Bodycam footage shows Kerr ignoring repeated commands to stop as he drove the mower several hundred feet. After stopping in a ditch, he stepped off with his hands raised. The deputy warned him not to run, but Kerr moved back toward the mower and reached near the seat.
When Kerr produced a handgun and pointed it toward the deputy, the deputy deployed his conducted energy device and repositioned to maintain visibility and distance. A gunshot was heard as Kerr fell behind the mower. Authorities said Kerr shot himself in the hand.

Backup officers later took Kerr into custody, and he was transported for treatment of injuries described as non-life-threatening.
