BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- Three suspects in the shooting of a Louisiana state trooper remained at large Saturday, a day after police called off their search of woods near the crime scene.

The trooper underwent surgery Friday for gunshot wounds in the shoulder and hand and was in stable condition on Saturday, said Deputy Mike Crawford of the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office. The trooper’s name will not be released until suspects are caught, Crawford said.

“He’s doing pretty good, he’s got his family around him and he seems to be in good spirits,” Crawford said.

The trooper was inside a Baton Rouge grocery store when he saw an armed robbery in progress and tried to intervene. A shootout ensued, and the three suspects escaped.

Crawford said investigators searched two homes Baton Rouge homes Saturday in connection with a “person of interest” in the case. One of the homes is owned by the mother of Trevor Detiege, who is wanted for questioning in a recent failed robbery of a Hibernia bank that had similarities to the grocery store robbery, he said.

Investigators also searched an apartment where Detiege had been seen.
