POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. (AP) - A Mason County sheriff’s deputy who was shot by a 16-year-old boy was in serious condition Wednesday at a Huntington hospital.

Sgt. Troy Stewart was talking to another teenager at a Point Pleasant residence about a juvenile case Tuesday afternoon when the 16-year-old allegedly shot him, State Police said.

“He wasn’t able to see the shooter because he was ambushed from the window,” Trooper 1st Class B.L. Keefer said. The alleged shooter was arrested.

Stewart was rushed to St. Mary’s Medical Center after being shot in the arm, County Commissioner Rick Handley said.

Handley said doctors were working to save the deputy’s arm.

“He was just a young man doing his job,” Handley said. “In that line of duty you don’t know what’s going to happen at any time.”

Neighbors tried to help Stewart, who was unable to get to his radio, Keefer said. The neighbors then called 911.

“Suffice to say that anytime an officer’s involved, an officer you work with and grow close to ... any police officer ... it ups the ante,” Keefer said.
