The Associated Press

Cromwell, Conn.- A Cromwell police officer who stopped to help a stalled motorist, ended up arresting the car’s driver and passenger on auto theft charges.

The white BMW stilled in a travel lane of Route 372 early Sunday morning.

Officer Ryan Bengston stopped to help the driver, who got the car started and drove a short distance, before stalling again.

That’s when a dispatcher told Benston that a check of the car’s license plate showed it had been stolen in Middletown Saturday night.

The 18-year-old driver, Ashley Banks of Middletown, and her 20-year-old passenger, Marcus Farmer of New Britain, were both charged with larceny and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

After a search, Farmer also was charged with marijuana possession.

They are due back in court on August 8th.
