Fla. officers help lost couple deliver baby

ORLANDO - Three Orlando police officers helped deliver a baby on the side of a road near downtown early Wednesday after the father got lost on his way to the hospital.

The officers were flagged down by Charles Allen, 31, while the expectant mother, who was unnamed, sat in the car. The couple and two young children had driven from Oviedo and were on their way to a local hospital when the baby’s head started to crown, said Sgt. Jay Behrens.

The Orlando Fire Department talked the officers through the delivery at Boone Avenue and South Street.

One of the officers, Nahoum Daniel, helped with the delivery and worked late. He made it to a class at Seminole Community College at 11 a.m., just in time to take a test.

The other officers, Richard Patterson and Maria Pomales, were also present for the birth.

The mother and the baby were recovering at Arnold Palmer Hospital.

The new father was arrested shortly after the birth on warrants for failing to appear in court on traffic charges. He was also being held for possessing marijuana and failing to pay child support, according to Orange County Jail records.
