CHICAGO, Ill. — An Amtrak police officer at Union Station lost part of his right thumb early Monday morning when it became caught in a bifolding door, Chicago police said.

The 48-year-old officer was on duty at 225 S. Canal St. when his thumb was severed at the joint about 1:30 a.m., said Central District Capt. Joseph Vaclavik. Vaclavik did not know what the officer was doing at the time.

“It was an accident,” he said.

The officer was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in a Chicago Fire Department ambulance and was in stable condition going into surgery, Vaclavik said.
