CHICAGO — The Chicago Police Department welcomed 107 new officers last week in an effort to boost recruitment numbers and meet a long-term goal of hiring 1,000 new officers.

FOX 32 reported minority recruitment efforts continue to succeed, with 61 percent of officers hired since 2017 identifying as minorities.

CPD authorities hope the hiring spree will improve relations with minority communities.

“You want to help change your community? Trust me, you fill out that application, you take that test, I will put you back in that neighborhood that you said you want to see changing,” Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said.

The department is also adding 200 duty vehicles with automatic license plate readers, as well as strategic policing centers to seven districts.
