SACRAMENTO — In an effort to get more of Sacramento’s police force on the streets, the department is implementing a new policy that requires all sworn personnel to work patrol a minimum of one week per month.
According to CBS, Chief Sam Somers has already hit the streets twice, as part of a new “All hands on” strategy to boost patrol, which is at an all-time-low.
“Patrol is going to be answering calls for service when someone calls 911 — they’re the first person to respond to those crimes often,” said spokesman Doug Morse.
Even officers on special teams like gang task forces will be on the streets, side-by-side with 20 rookies who just graduated from the academy.
“And someone who hasn’t been in patrol for a while, it reacquaints them with the basic functions, so it’s a win-win for everyone involved,” said Morse.
According to the report, only one officer per special team will be working patrol at a time, so as to not affect special investigations.
