JERSEY CITY, N.J. What would a man be doing with a large purse in a “99 cent” store? Apparently robbing as many dollar items as he could fit into it, police said.

Carlos Arroyo, 39, of Sixth Street in Jersey City, was charged with shoplifting $60 worth of merchandise from 99 Cents Power on Central Avenue Wednesday, a police report said.

At about 2:40 p.m., employees spotted Arroyo holding a large brown purse filled with unpaid items, the report said. An employee told the store owner, Pravincha H. Shah, and Shah confronted Arroyo, the report said.

According to the report, Shah locked the front store door to prevent Arroyo from escaping. While opening the door for some customers to leave, Arroyo shoved Shah and attempted to run out the door, but Shah and his employees stopped him, the report said.

Arroyo also had six outstanding warrants, the report said.
