DES MOINES, Iowa — In an effort to make to strengthen their community, two Iowa police departments have launched a social media campaign that comes with free donuts.
The Ames Police Department and Iowa State University Police said they are aiming to bring people back together after everything that’s occurred in their state and the United States, The Des Moines Register reported.
“Respect is a very basic message anytime you want to do it,” Officer Eric Snyder said. “Respect is cross-cultural.”
The video, which shows Snyder and Officer Anthony Greiter eating donuts, has gone viral and has a simple message: “Donut disrespect, donut discriminate, donut harass and donut hate.” The community is being asked to follow those commandments, show up to events the department will announce on Facebook and they’ll receive free donuts.

The video that sparked the donut idea came from a series the Ames Police Department does on Facebook called “Quick Tips with Officer Snyder.” The video, viewed over 7.5K times, didn’t offer a tip, it just showed Snyder eating donuts for 30 seconds.
“Yeah I want it to be well-received, but I’m more blown away about by how popular it’s been,” Snyder said. “We’re really trying to spread a message that makes our community better.”
