A Harris County sheriff’s deputy shot at a man wanted on a DWI offense over the weekend outside a downtown jail, a spokesman said.
Guillermo Oritz, 48, tried to visit an inmate at the Harris County Jail, 1200 Baker, about 6:45 p.m. Saturday, but a routine check of his license revealed the outstanding arrest warrant, said Lt. John Martin, of the Sheriff’s Department.
As deputies tried to arrest Ortiz, he fled.
Ortiz, who was carrying an infant, got into his vehicle and almost ran over deputies who had surrounded him, Martin said. One of them, whom he did not identify, fired at the vehicle. Martin said the deputy intentionally did not fire into the cab for fear of injuring the baby.
Ortiz is now also wanted on a felony evading arrest charge, Martin said.
