WAUKEGAN, Ill. — A student about to enter his senior year at Waukegan High School was shot and killed by a Waukegan police officer Wednesday afternoon after allegedly hitting another officer on the head with a hammer.

Jeffrey Lewis, 17, was pronounced dead on his front lawn, where the fight occurred, police said.

Officers were called to the 500 block of Helmholz Avenue at 2:15 p.m. by Lewis’ mother, who said Lewis and his 23-year-old brother were fighting in the front yard and that she needed help, police said.

Police Chief Bill Biang said two officers arrived and tried to break up the fight, and Lewis then hit an officer with a hammer. The officers called for backup, Biang said, and as more officers arrived, the second officer shot Lewis, Biang said. He declined to release the name of either officer.

The officer hit in the head was at Lake Forest Hospital Wednesday afternoon and was being treated for a skull fracture, Mayor Richard Hyde said.
