SHELL LAKE, Wis. — A special prosecutor has found a fatal shooting by a Spooner police officer was justified.
Chippewa County District Attorney Jon Theisen says no charges will be filed against the officer who fatally shot 72-year-old Phillip Metzig. Another officer who responded to the incident February 2 was also cleared.
Theisen says Metzig was shot after he pulled a rifle from his vehicle and pointed it at Officer Steven Pank. Shots were exchanged, leaving Metzig dead.
Police were called to an apartment complex parking lot after someone reported an older man was peering into vehicles.
The DA says Pank was in uniform, identified himself as an officer and was reasonable in his decision to use deadly force.
He says another responding officer, Stephen Christner, has also been cleared.
