LOS ANGELES — A Los Angeles police detective riding a motorcycle to a movie set where he was providing security was killed in a multi-car accident Sunday morning, authorities said.
Detective George Selleh, 52, was trying to avoid a disabled car that had hit the center divider on the Hollywood Freeway when he was thrown from his motorcycle at about 3:30 a.m. At least 10 other drivers also swerved to miss the car and became involved in the accident, California Highway Patrol Spokesman Alex Delgadillo said.
The entire southbound side of the freeway remained closed early Sunday afternoon.
Delgadillo said it had yet to be determined whether Selleh was struck by a car.
“There were a lot of cars involved and we have debris on all lanes of the freeway,” Delgadillo said. “It’s going to be a very tedious investigation.”
Selleh died at the scene, Delgadillo said.
There were no other injuries, but one woman was taken to a local hospital as a precaution, he said.
A 29-year veteran of the LAPD, Selleh is survived by his wife, a 20-year-old son and an 18-year-old daughter.
“It is always difficult when we lose one of our own,” said Selleh’s supervisor, Captain William Scott, in a statement. “The men and women of the Los Angeles Police Department are deeply saddened and our hearts and prayers go out to Detective Selleh’s family and his many friends.”
