COOK COUNTY, Ill. — A Cook County sheriff’s police academy instructor died earlier this week after collapsing during a run at the sheriff’s training facility in Maywood, authorities said Saturday.
Sheriff’s police Officer Jason Gallero, 45, was pronounced dead at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at Gottlieb Memorial Hospital in Melrose Park following the incident near Fifth and Chicago avenues in Maywood, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Gallero died of heart disease, with diabetes a contributing factor, the medical examiner’s office determined after an autopsy.
Gallero had collapsed during “a colors run at the … Sheriff’s Police Training Academy, where he served as a highly respected instructor,” Thursday morning, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.
Gallero started as a sheriff’s corrections officer in 1994 and joined the sheriff’s police in 2002.
“Jason was beloved by countless friends, family members, and his fellow officers. Officer Gallero was a passionate member of the law enforcement community and truly enjoyed his time training future police officers and deputy sheriffs,” the office said in the release.
Gallero is survived by a daughter and other family members, a sheriff’s office spokeswoman said.
A wake was scheduled for 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at St. Rita of Cascia Shrine Chapel, 7740 S. Western Ave., with a 6 p.m. law-enforcement walk-through. A funeral Mass was scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Divine Providence Catholic Church, 2550 Mayfair Ave. in Westchester.
