QUITMAN COUNTY, Miss. — A deputy was killed Sunday morning in a crash while responding to a call.

Deputy Jimmy Clark was responding to a shooting call when he swerved to avoid two dogs in the road, The Clarion-Ledger reported.

Fellow officers described Clark as a well-liked man who was always willing to help a friend.

“He was just helpful. He worked a lot of night shifts from 12-8, and he’d call whoever worked the day shift after him, he’d call in the morning to say, ‘If you need me call me,’ and he did that every day. That was him,” Deputy Tommy Bryant said.

Those who were close to him say the loss became real when they came to work Monday.

“I’m sitting at my desk, and I’m so used to seeing him drive by on his way home,” town clerk Stephanie Armstead said. “Today he didn’t.”

Bryant said that Clark will be remembered as a man who loved being a police officer.

“He loved a lot of blue lights on his car. If he told me one time, he told me 1,000 times, he loved them. His car had more lights than anybody else on there,” Bryant said. “If there was anybody who really loved being the police, that was Jimmy.”

Clark is survived by his wife and children. He began his career as a police chief in Crowder before he left nearly two years ago to become a Quitman County deputy.
