NORFOLK, Va. — One police officer and a 17-year-old were killed in a shooting late Friday that injured another officer.

Police were still trying to piece together the incident early Saturday morning, which involved multiple scenes and several blocks around part of Tidewater Drive.

Around 10:50 p.m., 29-year-old James Brown was shooting at cars in the 8400 block of Chesapeake Boulevard, police spokeswoman Karen Parker-Chesson said. One of the bullets struck and killed 17-year-old Mark Rodriguez, who was sitting in his car.

Officers Brian Jones and Curtis Allison responded to the situation and saw Brown’s Jeep in the 7400 block of Wellington Road. Both were struck by gunfire, Parker-Chesson said.

Brown was fatally shot by the officers.

Jones, 35, died later at the hospital. Allison was treated and released.

Michael Dixon went into a convenience store near the corner of Tidewater Drive and Stanley Street about 10:30 p.m. to play lotto. He said he heard a round of gunfire from outside a short time later. Another round of gunfire followed a few minutes after that.

“This can’t be happening,” he thought.

There were many people in the area who might have witnessed the events. Police were asking them to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP if they had any tip.

“We’re still trying to connect the dots,” Parker-Chesson said.

She also offered the department’s thoughts and prayers to the fallen officer’s family.

“It’s a heartbreaking situation,” she said.
