SANDY, Utah — A former Sandy police officer charged with faking tickets and overtime billings pleaded guilty Monday to one count of third-degree felony theft.

In exchange for Eric Cunningham’s plea, prosecutors dismissed one count of third-degree felony communication fraud.

Cunningham, 31, reportedly submitted claims for 56 hours of overtime he was not entitled to, along with recording 158 falsified citations from August 2009 through March of this year.

He reportedly resigned after a February audit uncovered the discrepancies, estimated by city officials to have cost them more than $1,900.

Cunningham faces up to five years in prison when he is sentenced Sept. 27 by 3rd District Judge William Barrett.
