Texas officer suspended for beating

The Associated Press

AUSTIN, Texas — An Austin police officer who was acquitted in the beating of a handcuffed suspect has been suspended for 70 days for using undue force.

Police Chief Stan Knee ordered the suspension of Officer Christopher Gray yesterday, citing the 28-year-old officer for using excessive force while subduing Ramon Hernandez in 2005.

The incident was captured on a patrol car video camera.

Gray was one of three officers involved in the arrest of Hernandez, who had left the scene of a minor traffic accident in north Austin. Officers say Hernandez resisted arrest and reached for one of the officer’s guns.

Last month, a jury acquitted Gray and former officer William Heilman of misdemeanor official oppression. Heilman quit the force after the incident.
