BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. — Boynton Beach police on Friday released dramatic video that captured the moment a Palm Beach sheriff’s deputy pulled a gun on his ex-girlfriend before shooting and critically injuring her and killing himself.
Yuly Solano backed away in apparent fear and shock and threw a hand to her face as Deputy Michael DeMarco pointed the gun at her as she walked her dog.
DeMarco, 55, had been with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office since 1995.
DeMarco’s relationship with Solano, 41, a bank worker and a single mother from Peru with a daughter in college, began in May and ended three weeks before the ambush on Oct. 12 at the Inlet Harbor Club, a gated community in Boynton Beach.
Solano was shot four times and suffered a punctured lung and liver. She was hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
Two days after the shooting a friend said Solano was alert and talking if not extremely traumatized. She would require several surgeries, friends said.
DeMarco was on duty and in uniform and waited in a sheriff’s vehicle before he confronted Solano. He shot her with his sheriff’s-issued handgun.
Yeni Gonzalez, who identified herself as a friend and co-worker of Solano, told the South Florida Sun Sentinel that DeMarco started harassing her friend after their breakup.
The former couple’s dispute included a civil lawsuit where DeMarco sought payment from Solano for an approximately $1,700 mattress and almost $700 mirror.
