I read a post a while back that talked about what to do if you drop a piece of your equipment; flashlight, ticket book, etc. The posting Officer stated that you should have the subject step away, maybe even turn around while your retrieve your property, and I can’t agree more. When the subject drops an item, such as his license or vehicle registration, I’ve seen some Officers bend down and pick the item up, leaving themselves open for attack by the subject. Don’t allow yourself to fall victim to a planed attack. If the subject drops his ID, or anything else, step back and instruct him to turn around and pick the item up. The reason you want him to turn around is, once he bends over he is in position to lunge forward and tackle your legs if you are standing close enough. Remember, these guys plan and teach themselves ways to beat the cops. Don’t let them outsmart you.
Another thing I’ve seen is officers tell subjects to take there hands out of their pockets. A few things to consider before having them remove their hands: If there hands are in their pockets, removing them is one more thing they have to do before attacking you. So, if you have a cover Officer, and it doesn’t appear that there is anything big enough in there pockets to harm you, let them keep their hands where they are.
However, if you have that “feeling”, you know that “feeling” that all cops get, or its obvious that they are holding something, or fumbling for something in their pocket, by all means, have them remove their hands. But first, have them turn away from you, and then remove their hands. This puts time on your side to react to his attack. Not to mention, most tactical interview positions still put you within that 21" distance and you would not be able to react with the proper force if the subject did take out a knife or worse yet, a gun.
One in 6000 Officers will get killed this year; being lazy will only increase your odds.
Stay Safe!!
