What do you think about as you set out on your shift? Let me share some healthy thinking for all law enforcement personnel.
Always head out with a clear mind — clear from negative thinking. Believe that you are prepared to deal with whatever comes your way in a professional and vigilant and tactical manner. Always head out prepared to fight for your life — and never give up even if you’re injured.
Always use your seat belt when running emergency calls. And always wear your vest no matter how hot, heavy, or uncomfortable you may think it is — a bullet in the chest will be much hotter, heavier and uncomfortable.
Remember to trust your gut instincts — if it looks smells feels dangerous or threatening, it probably is. Also remember that complacency kills, but that paranoia will make you crazy.
Check your equipment beginning each tour and recheck your cruiser after each shift, particularly if you had to transport subjects during your day. Look for discarded contraband or weapons. Speaking of your car, get a trauma kit for your cruiser.
This info may sound like common sense for daily patrol. I’m sure we don’t overlook much, but make your daily work habits vigilant and tactical. You owe it to yourself and the officers you work with.
Be safe smart, vigilant, and tactical.
