A California Highway Patrol officer shot and wounded a man who allegedly drove his SUV into a stopped car and attacked the officer early Sunday, authorities said.
About 3:20 a.m., two CHP officers stopped a driver they suspected was drunk in a red Nissan Sentra near Hesperian and Lewelling boulevards in San Lorenzo, an unincorporated community east of Oakland.
A brown Ford Explorer that wasn’t involved with the car then arrived and rammed the CHP patrol car, and the driver “came out ... fairly quickly, from what I understand, and started to attack the CHP officers,” said Alameda County sheriff’s Sgt. J.D. Nelson.
In response, one officer fired a shot, according to Nelson, whose agency patrols San Lorenzo. The driver, a 38-year-old San Francisco man, was struck in the abdomen and was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley. The CHP officers were uninjured.
“It’s really kind of bizarre,” Nelson said.
