N.M. deputy cleared in shooting

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — A Doña Ana County sheriff’s deputy was cleared of wrongdoing Tuesday in a fatal July shooting.

District Attorney Susana Martinez and Lt. Rich Libicer of the New Mexico State Police Criminal Investigations Section said during a news conference that Deputy Carlos Montoya, a two-year department veteran, was justified in using lethal force against M/gan Dylan Causey, 34.

“Our recommendation at this time is that this is an exonerated shooting,” Libicer said.

The deputy, who fired one round from his .40-caliber service weapon, striking Causey in the neck, was justified in his use of deadly force and acted appropriately and within the parameters of his training given the fact his life was in immediate danger. . .Full Story
